The Settlers of Catan Review

The Settlers of Catan by Klaus Teuber is a European style board game where players collect resources in order to advance their settlements by building roads and cities. The objective of the game is to be the first to score 10 victory points.

Catan is considered one of the “Big Four European Style” board games, along with Carcassone, Ticket to Ride, and Alhambra and has been used by many gamers to introduce their non-gaming friends to board games. In fact many years ago this is how I became hooked on modern board games.

Catan has simple rules which makes it easy for beginners to learn, but can become a great game for experts because of the amount of strategy that goes into playing. One of the greatest components of the game is the fact that the board changes every game, with 6 different types of land tiles dealt out randomly to form the board and numbered circles placed on top to show the tiles value for that game.

I would recommend this game to both beginners and long time veterans alike, as it has found a permanent position of one of my top all time favorite games.
